Online Survival Skills
How are your computer skills?

If you have the majority of skills listed below, then you are ready for online learning. It’s that simple.

  • I can turn on and shut down my computer
  • I can connect to the Internet
  • I can contact my Internet service provider for technical assistance
  • I can use a mouse to click, double-click, drag and drop
  • I can use a word processing program (ex. Microsoft Word) to enter text
  • I can use a file manager to find and save files
  • I can use a file compression program (ex. Winzip)
  • I can start software programs such as web browsers (ex. Netcape Navigator or Internet Explorer)

If using a browser, you will need to know how to use its basic functions:

  • I can enter URLs in the location bar
  • I can move back and forth between pages
  • I can save locations as bookmarks
  • I can refresh or reload pages
  • I can use links
  • I know how to “download” information on my computer
  • I currently have an email address
  • I know how to send and receive email messages
  • I know how to attach a file to an email message
  • I know how to “paste” text from a word processor into an email message
  • I know how to receive a file attachment from incoming email

Before starting an online course or program –

  • Be sure that you have the proper equipment to help you proceed with your online education experience with as few interruptions or problems as possible.

The minimum browser requirements are:

  • Internet Explorer 5.1 for the Macintosh
  • Internet Explorer 5 for the PC
  • Netscape 4.7 for the Macintosh
  • Netscape 4.7 for the PC
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 for Windows or Mozilla Firefox 1.5 for Windows

Update to the latest browsers :

If your computer can support a later version, it is recommended you get the newest non-beta release available.

• Check the site of the institution you choose for requirements specific to the institution. Generally, as with most other major purchases, it is good advice to choose a reputable brand from a reputable source.
